Title: My computer
Post by: FallenStar on September 14, 2009, 10:55:47 AM
To All concerned

My computer has gone down.  I will be unable to do any RPS or member promoting until I can get it fixed.  I'm just glad this PS3 works well enough for this.

Did you say PS3? :o

What games do you have? I have a few multiplayer ones... I wish I had a HDTV though, I can hardly read the text in most games because the game designers are too inconsiderate to compensate for people without HDTVs.

Everytime I tell it to turn on,  it starts to boot up then shuts itself off. If I can't get it fixed the site is liable to go down because I won't be able to make the payment to the host... =/

If you're running out of time just PM the details to me. I don't have much money left these days but i'll cover you for this month.

I wholeheartedly wish you success in getting your PC back in working shape, and offer any assistance I may be able to provide.

Unfotunately, I get the feeling that what I need is an honest to God computef expert to help. >_>

EDIT - Serika, it looks like I might be able to get the payment in with this PS3.

Maybe your fan/cooling system is broken - that's very characteristic of overheating issues. You may have to get it replaced if that's the case, but it's much better than having to replace the whole computer, not to mention lose everything on the hard drive.

Fan works fine.  The temp. monitor on the front was only about 113 and it was cooling. No, what seems to be the trouble is a lightning strike  that may have done something to the USB ports.

I doubt fucked USB ports would be messing with you computers boot settings. If you've got one available, I'd suggest using a CD based OS, like Knoppix, and see if that gets past the boot problem.

Something like that happend to me before. I tried to connect a printer/scanner to my old computer and it only ever worked on 1 of the ports. When i moved the cord to a different USB port my computer would keep restarting before it could even boot up.

What do you have in your USB ports right now, Star? Would it be possible to take everything out, or does your mouse go in there?

I've tried plugging in the keyboard into every USB port on the computer with no power making it to the keyboard.  I don't know what else to try. :S

Poor guy, can't catch a break. First your internet gives you grief, now your computer itself.

What OS you using? I've had success against reboot loops using Recovery Console and chkdsk if you're on XP and have your OS CD.
*If you've got the XP CD, stick it in and boot up. Should take you to the windows XP setup (you may need to press a key during boot to get to boot to CD)
*Should eventually get to a screen with an option that says something like "To repair Windows, press R." Press R :P.
*You should be taken to a command prompt interface. You'll have a list of windows installations to log on to ... probably only going to have one. You may need the password to your administrator account.
*After that, type "chkdsk c: /r" (without the quotes) and let it run (it may take a very long time).
*When it's done, type EXIT and reboot if it doesn't happen automatically.
I've only had to do that twice, but it's 2/2. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, I wouldn't. Take it to a shop if you can or make use of the warranty if you've got one. It's just a suggestion.

If you're on Vista, your guess is as good as mine. I've never seen it outside of XP.
In any case ... good luck. Hope to see you on IM again soon. Me an' Mia will miss you :P.

Yeah, I know. My life has gone straight to hell ever since I had to move. =_=

As for your idea... not only does my computer use Vista, but I don't even seem to have an OS disc. All I have is the damn key.

I  swear... sometimes, I just wanna say fuck it all... =_=

It's possible the problem Star is having has to do with the motherboard. Had it happen before the motherboard got fried for some reason or another on one of my old computers and it kept booting and restarting and kept repeating the process. If the mother board is fucked then basically any USB jacks and everything else might not work at all.

Let's hope it's not because that might just mean the loss of my C drive, my porn, my ROMs, my emulators, and a shitload of other stuff. >_>

Then again, all the movies and stuff like that are on the F drive, soooo... >.>

Memory drives are different than the motherboard I do believe... so a fried motherboard shouldn't mean a loss of saved data...

Also star when you get a chance I need to talk to you regarding something in the ap dat RP.

Yes, Scoose... I had been planning to catch you on  IRC or MSN, but that's going to have to wait...

Maybe, you could PM me?

UPDATE:  It seems like one way or another, by Tuesday night, I'll have a working computer;  either my new one will be fixed or my old one.  My computer man has agreed to let me use my old one as a backup anytime my new one goes down - in essence, he's giving it back to me.  =D

Also, he thinks it's not a fatal problem - that the drives are still intact and the information savable - it's just that he thinks it might take a couple of weeks for replacement parts *IF* he can't access the BIOS and whatnot...

that's good to hear. at least you could Forum Rp with the ps3 if you wanted.
unless you don't have a keyboard.

It's not a problem to type - using my computer's keyboard on my PS3 (which I was surprised I could do).  The problem arises from a character limit... Sure, I could post RP lines, but I'd have to make several posts to do it.  <_<'

so the ps3 has it's own web character limit that dominate a websites character limit?
Title: Re: My computer
Post by: FallenStar on September 19, 2009, 04:49:48 AM
Yep. It's like trying to type on YIM or WLM.  You can only put so much before you'd have to say  (TBC) or something.  joygasm.  >_>

wow, that sucks.
oh well, the ps3 is a gaming machine anyway, not a web machine ^_^

Tell that to the geniuses who keep making MMOs for the PS series of consoles. (Square, I'm looking at you... effing FFXI and FFXIV... >_>

And technically FFXII, but that was worse as it was offline :P

FFXII isn't an MMO...the hell?
Title: Re: My computer
Post by: FallenStar on September 19, 2009, 11:05:27 AM
No, B.u.S, FFXII is not an MMO... It was designed rather as the closest thing you could get to an MMO without it being an MMO.  I actually liiked it in terms of gameplay;  what I didn't like was lack of ID protection, and story.  If there was a true romance in the game, I would have liked it a lot better.

At any rate, let's focus on the topic at hand. My computer.  You guys can put all FF related discussion in the FF board.  =P

glad to hear the good news Star, I got some stuff to show you that isn't RP related... I recently picked up a 3D model program... basically what that means is I designed that 50 km long ship in it  :tongue_smilie:

Star, you seem to have PC/Internet issues with inordinate frequency!  Must investigate further.

I had USB issues with an old computer of mine - any time I plugged anything into the rear USB slots, it'd break whatever was plugged into it. I lost like 3 controllers that way :/

You know I had a similar problem with my Dell... I just tossed it aside and got a new computer though but I might have been having the same problem >_>

problem being it kept shutting itself down and telling me it shut itself down to protect itself...

I am officially back on my computer now and everything looks A-O.K.  I don't foresee any more problems with this thing for time being.

Question star: I have a rootkit problem atm and I don't have a program that is able to remove the infection... I was going to get a program from someone but their house recently burned down and he lost the programs in the fire so it'll be a while before he can get them to me...  Do you know any programs or persons who might be able to help me?

Nope, sorry.  I'm no computer expert, nor do I know any.  The closest one is like Duce, or Doom_Guard, or maybe even Poowrite...   but definitely not me, sorry.   :S
