You can now upload your fics as .htm files.

I asked Star about this the other day. Not only will it make the manga list easier to post if it doesn't have to be zipped first, it could also fix problems in this fiction board. This should work for anyone who prefers to read stories in their browser (you can just click on the htm attachment and read it there), anyone who doesn't like doc or rtf, and it can keep stories off the actual discussion topics. (Personally, i don't like having to redo all my formatting in forum code.)

So i'm reposting a recent fic as an htm. Even if you're not a Zelda fan, try opening it and then post and say if you like things posted as html or not. I want to know if this works for both sides, those who prefer to download attachments and those who prefer to read in the browser.



Summary: Saria leaves the forest to visit Link in Hyrule and learns just how different town life is. There are many rules and laws, unlike the forest where one could just pee on the ground.

Just kidding.     Still, I do love .doc file formats and I'm not sure how I would convert it myself... I'm sure Word has some way to do it... I'm just not sure.

I just insert the html flags manually. You don't need to learn that many if all you're doing is making text.

I certainly support this. Not quite as safe as PDFs are, and far less pleasing to the eye, but in any case a great improvement over .doc. HTML is a simple enough language, and seeing as this is at the same time plaintext, the content won't be lost even if HTML goes out of fashion.

Question to Star: could you allow for .htm(l) files that are attached to be viewed without being downloaded?

I wouldn't know how to do that; it's easy enough to allow htm and html to be uploaded as attachments but that's delving further into the SMF program than I'm really capable of.

Looking at the Talkbox failure ought to be clear enough that I don't know what the fuck to do to fix even the smallest issue on this site without Duce's help... and apparently, Duce has taken a runner  <_<;

I'm not sure what to do now.

I was thinking if you don't want to download it you could just click the attachment and choose "Open with Firefox (default)". For saving it to your computer you could just choose Save File.

I find that .pdf is more useful for full size books, stuff with pictures embedded in it, or manuals that wouldn't print correctly as html. On my end, at least, short stories load up much faster as txt or html.

That doesn't seem to be an option; I'm not sure why, but it's probably because the attachments aren't just links to files.

How fast PDFs load depends on the viewer you are using. In any case, PDF to HTML conversion generally works better than the other way around, so it should be a simple matter of running it through pdftohtml for whoever doesn't like it.

Their main system, i.e. what you see before you reach the forum? I find it fairly typical, with some nice features. Overly centred on poop desperation, though, they could have implemented the `desperation' tag somewhat better.
