Title: Moderator Position Open
Post by: FallenStar on September 29, 2009, 03:21:55 PM
Due to the fact that TaintedLove broke a promise to me in terms of how she acts here on the forum, she has officially been demodded.  We had made a compromise that in exchange for me overlooking her trolling habits, she would not troll me.  However, she has failed to live up to her end and thus, has been punished accordingly.

This means that we have a moderator position open. If any of you is interested in this position, please place your application here in this topic for official perusal.

Well, I haven't been here too long, and I know I have a lot more to contribute, but I thought I'd just put in an application anyway, I meant what's the worst that can happen?

So...why would I want to become a mod? Well, ever since I found this site, I've loved it, and I want to see it flourish and to have an active role in this would be awesome. We often see the rules broken, or misunderstandings, and I just want to be a voice of calm and fair moderation to make sure everyone is treated right.

I believe I can contribute also to the fanfic section, as I will be writing more soon, and I believe that I am dedicated to making this site better. AGD didn't just become the best anime and female desperation site around overnight, it took hard work, and I want to help repay some of that by putting some work in.

Thanks for reading

JackO

Also, may I add if B.u.S or Scoozums were to run, I'd support their causes over mine, as they're the first people that would come to my mind as people worthy of filling this position.

Well, I'd be willing to contribute, though I haven't been around here for very long. I do have over 7 years of modding and over 6 years of administrating experience - PM me if you want the specific details on that. Anyway, this place looks like it could use some more maintenance, I could think of a few ways to make this place more appealing, personally... the most important thing is that the mods get along with each other, and with the members, as well.

On a side note, what happened to your admin account?

I happen to be emotional and if people complain too much about what I'm doing, I don't often want to stay as leader.   :death:

Aww come on, that's not being a true leader - you gotta take charge! People won't like some of your decisions, and there's nothing you can do about that... but you don't have to let it get the best of you :P

In all seriousness though. I don't know if you're just trying to mess with my head because I'm new, but I'm offering you a word of advice in case you're serious :P

Well, if you're going to listen to the criticism Star, please listen to the praise. In the time I have been here and experienced you as leader, all I have seen is a competent, dedicated individual, who runs the site efficiently, and to the best of his ability. I've seen your human side, your human sense of humour, decency, everything.

I know I can't be the only one that thinks you have done an excellent job here, and whatever happens I'd like to say thanks for that Star.

Of course I'm not a good leader; I'm far too emotional for that. That's why I stepped down as admin. I can't stand it when people dislike me for things I simply messed up on. I never intend to cause offense, but I always seem to wind up doing it, nonetheless.   :death:

Well, you brought together an entire community, that's pretty impressive right there. Anyway, it's all up to you to decide whether or not you think you can continue on. If you can't, then surely someone else can release you from those chains and take over for you. It's good to see that you're not just letting this place fall apart though.

Whatever happens Star, I like you, not because you were the leader of the site, or because I'm trying t cheer you up, but because you did your best to keep this place an active, fun community.

And so what if 2 members are too ignorant to see that you're a good guy, the other 99% of members here are on your side, I know I am.

No no no, Phatman is not ignorant. That fight was over a personal issue, and even though the insult was unintentional it still hurts to be reminded of something that can't be helped. I went over this with FallenStar earlier so now he has a better idea of why it happened.

Now can we please move on without anyone leaving the forum over this?

New account star?  :S  I don't see why you had to give up the other you and step down from admin-ship :/

Anyway, App time

Reason for wanting to be a moderator:

I like it, plain and simple.  For me moderating isn't really a chore it's something I enjoy doing.

Experience:

I took up a moderator position in Darkthrone's Beta version but before that I'd been moderator or administrator on several Invisionfree forums that dealt with gaming or anime or what have you.

I made this Kind of plain and straight forward so if you have questions for me feel free to ask. :)

Boss, you're awesome no matter what happens :) Don't worry about a thing, you know you've got me 100% :D

As for the Mod job... I hope I can still be considered for the job :)

No offense intended, B.u.S, but you and I are a lot alike and I don't really need a "Yes Man" moderator.  Not that I don't believe whole-heartedly in many things you say and do, but I need someone who has a bit of a different point of view, yet is not so vastly different like TaintedLove or Chan that they will argue incessantly once I make a decision.  I'm looking for someone to fit the middle ground, so to speak.

Woah woah woah, a "Yes Man"? Since when have I been one of those? I still hate FFXII, don't forget :P

FFXII aside, you and I see eye-to-eye on the important issues, such as the leecher purges, grammatically correct posts, and whatnot.  =P

Wouldn't that make me good at a Mod job if me and the boss see eye-to-eye? :P

No, it would actually be like Montgomery Burns surrounding himself with Yes-Men who agree with him and cause him to go broke.  =P

As it stands now, I have one moderator Yes-man (or at least, he's agreeable enough to help out when I have a problem), one moderator that follows the middle ground, and one that does nothing but constantly argue for more power.  What I need is one more for the middle ground and right now, B.u.S., you'd be a second Yes-man, since we agree on so many things.  =P

This may sound absolutely out of control and kind or weird, but I'd like to apply. Even though you and I are not on the best of terms, I would like to help improve this community, and while we may not be buddy buddy I can definitely work with you and not against you for the greater good.

I've had over 8 years of experience on fora, moderating chatrooms for almost as long, and I also am a net admin in my friend's chatroom as well. I have not been banned from any forum yet due to ignorance or not following the rules, and I have a very good understanding of what should and should not be said. This being said, since I am not a yes man, I will be able to provide an opposing point of view without being overbearing.

I'm not insanely furious with you, but don't expect us to become pals again if you do agree.

Phatman, I can't deny that I would love to give you modship as a way of mending fences and certainly, your experience and ability to help have no real equal. I remember how you helped me set up my IRC chan and how, if I ever had a computer problem, you were someone I could turn to for advice. I would not like for a momentary lapse in judgment and overall ignorance to ruin what should have been a great friendship.

That being said, I will make every effort to try to remain impartial during this process and try to pick someone who will fill the spot with the exact combination of loyalty and opposing viewpoints that I desire.

B.u.S., my friend, you are like me so much it's really uncanny. Though we may disagree on FFXII and a few things here and there, I don't really think I could put up with another person who would go all emo and post it in the shoutbox; I have a hard enough time just dealing with myself as it is.  Plus, and I hate to bring up old news but I think it's really relevant here, there has been no one more complained about as moderator than you and while I'm sure you meant nothing by it (as I said before, I often agreed with you in principal if not in actions), I must take that into consideration as well.

Post by: Phatman_Dover on September 30, 2009, 01:40:07 PM
I understand that you must remain impartial to this process and that feelings may motivate you. If it helps, my loyalty is to this site and everyone, which by proxy means loyalty to you in some fashion. I'm not going to drive the point home constantly, but everyone please understand before there is a misunderstanding: I am not trying to play on his emotions. I have wanted to mod this place since I saw it needed major work, and it is unfortunate that these two events coincide so close to each other.

That being said, I'll let the rest of the applicants get on with it.

XD Judging by some of the experience of the other board members, I'm probably already out of the running!  However, I would still like to apply for a mod position.

Reasoning:

I like to mod.  Plain and simple.  Perhaps it's a power complex, but I enjoy helping others, and I feel I could help others more if I have more ability to do so; relating to a forum, that would mean being a mod.

Experience:

I have been a Global Moderator on two other sites for over a year, and I've been an Admin on one other site.  I've also experimented with creating my own site.  (However, time constraints got in the way...:P)  I am fiercely loyal, extremely dedicated, and I make a point to speak/type with proper grammar and spelling, which is useful for someone that site members look up to.  I have never been demoted from a mod position, and everyone who's seen my mod work has always praised me for it.

In short, I have experience doing that sort of work and I have a good work ethic.

I can't help but chuckle at all the people who say they'd like to mod. I mean, it can get very rough at times. Probably not as bad in a relatively small community as this though... I'm used to modding communities of 10k+ people, and if you don't know what you're getting into, you're in for trouble. I think Star has the right idea in looking for a neutral mod though. The point of a moderator is to keep the rules enforced in an unbiased manner, so it'd be wise to choose someone who doesn't have extreme opinions, and doesn't have any strong liking or disliking for anyone here. A good mod can be very difficult to come across... you also need someone who's active enough to moderate efficiently. There will be plenty of applications though, but I suggest you watch all the applicants closely before making your decision.

I've had to deal with situations like that before. :)

The best way to deal with a situation where you, as a mod, are unable to maintain an unbiased state, is to notify another mod and have them deal with the situation.  At least that's how it works with official sites like Darkthrone.  Also situations that directly involve a moderator should be dealt with by another moderator.  This isn't to say mods can't solve their own problems it's just to say that it is usually best to get a third opinion when one is needed.

I have finally narrowed down the list of potential "contenders" for the open moderator position.

Due to her seniority, Phatman Dover is number one on my list, but I am still undecided between her and B.u.S.  I would like to speak to both of you either on IRC or in a YIM conference at the same time to better judge how each of you would take my directives and possibly point out things I might miss.

Leviathan Mist, Jack0, I'm sorry. You guys are still too new to the forum to be considered for this position at this time. The Engima, I like the way you work, but, sadly, you don't have the seniority as of yet. Scoozums, seriously... I told you you wear me out as it is, and that's just in conversations about RPs.  I don't need a moderator who'll ask "Should I do this, should I do that..."  =_=

You don't need to apologize to me, I only offered my assistance. In fact, I would've been surprised and a little suspicious of your abilities if you had modded me after just three weeks. You seem to know what you're doing and that's fine by me. I do what I can to help, and the mod status means nothing.
Title: Re: Moderator Position Open

B.u.S. , I will say this;  the biggest problem to your modship comes from staff members who think you aren't cut out for the position.  I, myself, don't know as I don't know your moderation record, but I would suggest that if I am to take your application with 100% certainty, then you would need to win back the favor of the rest of the staff in addition to me, okay?

Understandable choice :)

I know how to be a good mod but you also have never seen me in action and only know me for what I'm like as a member so I can't blame you for your skepticism :P

Maybe some time in the future I'll be given a chance to help out.

Err-hem, I suppose it may be a little bit too late to apply, but I would like to throw my hat into the ring if said ring is still open for hats. Well... right, you get my drift.

Reasons:

I love this forum and I've been wanting to help keep it going strong for some time now. Also, to my understanding, I've been offered the job once before.

Experience:

I can't say I've ever modded a forum before, but I have been a co-president of a school club, and I often take up the role of leader for group projects. I also like to think I would mod with logic and the established rules rather than emotions or gut feelings. That said, I can always see a gray area in a situation.

If it's too late to apply or you don't choose me, I understand completely.

I support B.u.S for modship, but i suppose ill apply to

Reasons:

I love this site and the community in it, i have been a member here for a while, and would love to be able to help out.

Experience:

I guess you could say i have a lot of experience in moderating. I own my own Inuyasha Anime website with over 12,000 site members, which consists of a highly active chat room and forums page

My site is over 2 years old now, and besides my own site, i am a moderator for a web hosts support forums page (www.Webs.com)
